CARLISLE
September is always a good time to ride up north. The motorway is a pain but a 5 am start and you’re up in Sheffield in a few hours. The Peak District is always great riding, the villages and lanes are a must. Don’t forget the A57 Snake Pass , the Derbyshire section of the Peak District, crossing the Pennines between Glossop and the Ladybower Reservoir at Ashopton. The road was engineered by Thomas Telford and opened in 1821. The pass carries the A57 road between Manchester and Sheffield, but it is no longer the main signposted route between those two cities, with traffic instead directed through the Woodhead Pass to the north.
That’s good for us Bikers the less traffic the better. The ride up to Carlisle is a fair run up through Glossop staying west of Leeds and across the Yorkshire dales and on to Penrith for lunch. Reaching Carlisle by nightfall and staying at Roman Wall Lodges Campsite, run by Paul Dry, who welcomes bikers on the campground and in the well fitted out pods. The next day we did a great ride around the coast on the A75 through Annan Dumfries and around to Ayr.
Day 3 was to Kielder Forest Park, just over the Scottish border. More stunning scenery and a nice off road stretch on the toll road from the visitor centre to Hindhope Linn. The whole area is perfect for touring and camping along Hadrians Wall with easy access to the North Pennines.
